Fundamentals of Trauma Informed Care is an introductory educational and practical experience for wellness providers and folks who work with bodies that want to make a greater impact in their clients’ lives while caring for themselves.
You are in a unique position to usher incredible change in the world through your knowledge and skill in working with the body. Recent science in the healing of trauma recognizes that focusing healing through the body is key to health, happiness, and wholeness.
This series is for you if you:
- Are a wellness provider who works with bodies and wants to make a greater impact in your clients' lives while caring for yourself.
- Want to learn how to read and respond to your own nervous system.
- Desire to expand your reach by growing your cultural awareness and creating safe spaces for diverse groups of people.
- Want to grow your awareness, compassion, learn and unlearn, and do less harm.
- Want to recognize how trauma manifests in a person.
- Work as a Massage Therapist, Chiropractor, Physical Therapist, Fitness Trainer,Yoga Teacher, Pilates Instructor, Reiki Practitioner, Rolfer, Acupuncturist, Naturopath.

This workshop is an introduction to powerful and deep topics. There is a short practice component and the remaining time is educational, inviting self reflection and curiosity. Practical tips for implementing some of the teachings in your practice right away will be offered. Take home resources and documents will be made available in a shared Google Drive.

Realize the Prevalence and Impact of Trauma on Individual and Communities
- Understand the definitions of trauma. Build awareness through statistics. Explore how to prevent trauma and build cultural awareness. By taking a wide view and attending to the good news of post traumatic growth and resilience you are empowered to serve more whole heartedly in your work.
Resist Retraumatizing
- Our humanity ensures our imperfection. Embracing our mistakes, doing less harm, practicing self compassion, self forgiveness and reducing hierarchy in our relationships through a collaborative model supports the powerful gifts of humility.
Recognize the Impact of Trauma on the Body
- Understand human neurobiology, the central nervous system and the stress cycle and how stress shows up in the body. Explore the nuances of the defensive system as it manifests fight, flight, and freeze states.
Respond to Foster Client Growth and Practitioner Self Care
- Learn how to read and respond to your own nervous system states. Explore ways to integrate mindfulness into your work including mindful movement, breathing practices, and aromatherapy. Learn trauma first aid through Bruce Perry's 3R's: Regulate, Relate, Reason.
This course can help you:
- Identify your internal and external resources that bring more calm to your bodymind.
- Improve client outcomes.
- Create accessibility to more diverse populations.
- Understand client behaviors within a framework of compassion.
- Offer a safe enough space for clients, while also being proactive in protecting your professional clinical practice.
- Collaborate with clients and bring mindfulness to consent as one of the keys to healing and empowerment.
- Deepen your personal and professional growth while preventing burnout and compassion fatigue.
About Joann Engelberth (she, her)
I know anxiety, and I know it well. Diagnosed with PTSD at age 19 and cPTSD at age 42, I’ve learned a lot about anxiety in the past few decades.
The past ten years of my life have been dedicated to my recovery for the benefit of myself, my family, my community, and all beings.
My yoga studies and trauma training have equipped me with a groundedness and freedom I thought I’d never experience. I am grateful to be in a position to share the knowledge and practices I’ve learned to heal myself with you.

I have been teaching Hatha Yoga and Yin yoga since 2017. I’m a 500 E-RYT Certified Yoga teacher, and I also bring 20 years of Personal training experience, specializing in pre & post rehabilitative work, to my yoga instruction.
I Graduated UVM Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude with a double major in Psychology and Sociology.

In 2017 my only child was diagnosed with cancer. Leukemia treatment was a 3+ years process. Two years into it, I, too, was diagnosed with cancer. I feel strongly that the healing work I had done during my life prepared me for the extreme stress I experienced.

I am a native of Puerto Rico. After high school, I earned a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, followed by a Doctorate Degree in Chiropractic from Life University in Marietta, Georgia. I have over 30 years of experience in the holistic chiropractic technique, Network Spinal Analysis.
Certified Aromatherapist
About 10 years ago I was introduced to essential oils and have been implementing them in my practice with astounding results. My focus is on emotional support by addressing the body and mind with the help of these natural essences.
Trauma-Informed Care Practitioner
My personal trauma journey led me to a Professional Certification as a Trauma-Informed Care Practitioner from the Trauma Informed Care Training Center. I am now able to see through the lens of trauma that guides me in supporting myself and my clients in a deeper way.
Teacher
I have taught Human Biology, Anatomy & Physiology at a college level. I enjoy co-leading healing workshops over the past 3 decades on hands-on clearing of the nervous system as a way to bring ease and peace to the bodymind.
